Vermont: 3 meth labs busted in Franklin County, Veromont

Vermont - A string of meth labs were busted in Franklin County, Vermont Tuesday afternoon. A lengthy drug investigation lead local police to the three sites. One was in Georgia, and two others in St. Albans City. The State Meth Lab Response team was called in, and entered the apartment on the corner of Fairfield and Lincoln streets, with guns drawn just after 8:45 p.m.

"It's standard procedure, because often times, in some areas where they experience this, they've encountered hostile individuals on the inside, or even booby traps," says St. Albans Police Chief Gary Taylor.

The response team confirmed what local police had suspected, and began drawing up plans to safely dismantle the mobile meth lab. Two hours later the scene was cleared. Local authorities say the investigation is ongoing and would not say if anybody had been arrested.

"We have identified individuals who are directly responsible for this site. We are in contact with them," says Chief Taylor.

The second residence in St. Albans was cleared by late Tuesday night. Police say the former cook site was on Lower Newtown Road, had been abandoned months ago, and posed no immediate threat.

A storage unit was also cleared late Tuesday night. Police say it appears that site was used to store the materials, which would become mobile meth labs at other sites.

About 20 residents were evacuated from the apartment where the mobile lab was discovered. The Red Cross set up a shelter for them in City Hall.

"It's crazy. I mean you're endangering everybody around you," says Melinda Martin who was evacuated. "There is kids in the building, people that live on the side of us that also has little kids. It's ridiculous. It's crazy."

Police and prosecutors are still trying to determine what, if any, charges will be brought in this case.
